Mill School Bury has an exceptionally broad curriculum encompassing a wide number of academic subjects. That curriculum is greatly complemented by a range of opportunities to enhance the cultural capital of pupils, as well as learning outside of the classroom. Headteacher, Deborah Morley tells us more:
“Our curriculum is very broad and gives many opportunities for academic and vocational achievements. We’re always looking at how we can offer even more chances for pupils to learn in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them.
“For example, our focus on reading and phonics is enhanced by our ‘Drop Everything and Read’ programme which sees specific time set aside each day for reading. The children can choose their own books from a wide selection in our school library and there’s comfy places to flop down with a book and just enjoy a good read in different places across the school.
“Our pupils are also really interested in the world around them, current affairs, politics and news. We want to encourage that as much as possible and so have weekly deliveries of First News, a student friendly newspaper, something the pupils really enjoy and which generates good conversations – and sometimes debates!
“Enrichment is also really important and we want learning to come to life for pupils. We’re currently organising a fantastic humanities trip to Durham. It’s an ambitious trip; there will be a two-night stay in Durham where the pupils will visit a range of historical and culturally significant locations, including Durham Cathedral.
“Over the next term we will also have regular visits from Lancashire Cricket Foundation who will be coming to deliver cricket sessions, Bury Music Service will be coming to run brass tuition sessions and the food technology class will be holding a ‘dining experience’ afternoon where their guests will enjoy a range of home-cooked delicious foods – as prepared by the pupils themselves!
“These links with the local community, and opportunities to experience new and different things, help us achieve our ambitions for pupils – to help them have the widest and richest educational journey possible, helping them establish a varied and strong foundation on which they can build their future success. It’s sure to be an exciting term!”
