Arc School Napton, part of Kedleston Group, was praised by Ofsted inspectors who found the school works successfully to re-engage children with education and develop their self-confidence and resilience.

The school specialises in support for children aged five to 11 and who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties and those who are autistic. All children attending Napton have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) and mainstream schools have not been able to meet their educational needs.

Despite often previously having negative views on learning, the pupils told inspectors they were happy at Napton, felt safe and were proud of the work they were doing.

Finding it to be ‘good’ in all areas, inspectors who visited the school noted: “On arrival in Arc Napton, pupils often have negative attitudes to learning. All the staff recognise this, but because they care for the pupils and maintain high expectations, pupils settle well into an effective routine of learning. Leaders ensure that pupils study a curriculum that prepares them well for their next steps.”

The report also praised the learning opportunities Napton offers children outside of the school’s gates including visits to Warwick Castle and a local falconry centre. And visits from the fire service, police, farmer and ice-cream man to talk to pupils have “broadened pupils’ experience”.

Staff from Napton told inspectors they “loved working at the school” while parents said they appreciated the progress their children were making there.

Headteacher at Arc School Napton Jenny Arnold said: “We are delighted that the hard work of the children and staff here at Napton has been recognised by Ofsted in this way. We’re very proud of all that the young people achieve during their time with us.”
