Students from Olsen House School recently visited the Williamson Tunnels.
The tunnels are a series of subterranean excavations in Liverpool and while the purpose of the tunnels is unknown - they were created under the direction of Joseph Williamson between 1810 and 1840 - it is thought Williamson created the tunnels to provide employment or for commercial quarrying.
The tunnels remained derelict and filled with rubble until 1995 and since then volunteers have re-discovered and excavated a network of tunnels, some of which are open to the public. Students enjoyed the tour and enjoyed creating their own theories on why they were built. After the tour students enjoyed a picnic and break in a local park and then went on to look at examples of art in the city.
