Mapesbury School in Cricklewood is due to open its doors in April 2025, and work to create a bespoke learning environment specifically for pupils with autism is well underway. The school will offer up to 54 places for children aged from seven to 16 years old who have an education, health and care plan (EHCP).
The school, which is on Walm Lane in Cricklewood, takes its name from the well-known and much-loved community park and garden, Mapesbury Dell, which is just a few minutes’ walk away.
The school will be led by Headteacher Adam De Vecchi, who said: “I am very excited to announce our plans to open our brand new school.
“We have a clear vision for Mapesbury School. We are creating a learning environment where pupils can feel safe, valued and happy that they belong. We know some neurodiverse pupils struggle to cope in mainstream settings and become disengaged with education. They would benefit from a personalised approach which is wrapped around them and that’s the approach we will be taking.
“We aim to be an inclusive school where children have a sense of their own identity and can develop an understanding of the world around them. We want our pupils to be as ambitious for themselves as we are for them. The curriculum will be adapted and flexible to meet the needs of our students and offer opportunities to gain qualifications across a range of subjects that suit their learning needs. There will be a strong focus on developing independence and employability skills.
“We are looking forward to being part of the vibrant North London community and to being a valuable and much needed resource for children and their families.”
A series of open day events are being held to meet the team and hear more – the first is on 21 November and parents and families are invited to register their interest visiting www.arcschoololdarley.co.uk/mapesbury.
